Yo La Tengo highlights Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival has announced the names of the 140 films selected for its 2011 festival; but the most recognizable name on this year’s bill isn’t a film at all.

On Thursday, the Missoula film festival announced that internationally acclaimed indie-rock trio Yo La Tengo will appear live in concert at this year’s BSDFF, performing live musical accompaniment to a series of documentaries by the late French filmmaker Jean Painlevé.

The band, long known for quirky tunes and equally creative stunts (at most dates on its current tour, the band begins by spinning a massive wheel that determines the concept for the show on the spot), has previously recorded soundtracks to some 23 films by Painlevé, whose groundbreaking documentaries combined elements of science, fiction, and surrealism.

The performance will take place Feb. 15 at the Wilma Theatre, and will mark Yo La Tengo’s first-ever Missoula appearance.

Other highlights of the 2011 festival, which runs for ten days Feb. 11-20, include a free opening night screening of Peter D. Richardson’s “How To Die In Oregon,” a retrospective of films by venerable filmmaker Chuck Workman, and more than twenty-five World, North American and US premiers of new non-fiction films.

“In every way, the festival continues to grow,” said Festival Director, Mike Steinberg, in a statement announcing this year’s festival selections. “It’s a clear reflection of the enormous support we have from our community and our national and local sponsors.”

The growth of the festival includes new venues this year, with screenings to be held on both screens at the Wilma Theatre and in a special screening room at the former Pipestone Mountaineering store, located at 129 W. Front St. in downtown Missoula.

Films selected for this year’s Feature competition are “Corner Store” (directed by Katherine Bruens), “Feathered Cocaine” (directed by Örn Marino Arnarson & Thorkell S. Hardarson), “Granito” (directed by Pamela Yates), “Holy Wars” (directed by Stephen Marshall), “Kati With An I”  (directed by Robert Greene), “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” (directed by Chad Friedricks), “Steam of Life” (directed by Joonas Berghall, Mika Hotakainen), “Summer Pasture” (directed by Nelson Walker, Lynn True), “This Way of Life” (directed by Thomas Burstyn), “Troubadours” (directed by Morgan Neville), “The Two Escobars” (directed by Jeff Zimbalist, Michael Zimbalist), and “We Still Live Here” (directed by Anne Makepeace).

Films selected for the Big Sky Award competition, which celebrates films set in the American West, are “Columbus Day Legacy” (directed by Bennie Klain), “Darwin” (directed by Nick Brandestini), “Hood to Coast” (directed by Christoph Baaden, Marcie Hume), “Play Again” (directed by Tonje Hessen Schei), “Roll Out Cowboy” (directed by Elizabeth Lawrence), and “Tuned In” (directed by Kevin Gordon).

The festival will also feature competition categories for short documentaries and mini-documentaries, as well as thematic presentations of films that focus on topics of language and literacy, art and music, and nature, wildlife, and the environment.

Tickets to the festival and the performance by Yo La Tengo are available now at the Festival’s Web site, www.BigSkyFilmFest.org.
